Within 35 miles of New York City on Tuesday, Sept. 23, the U.S. Secret Service launched an investigation that uncovered 300 SIM servers and more than 100,000 SIM cards.
This investigation was a part of a larger operation launched after senior U.S. government officials received multiple threats in the spring.
These centers, known as SIM farms, exist across the nation. This farm drew attention as the United Nations is meeting in New York City this week.
SIM farms are used to carry out communications-based attacks. They can mass generate mock phone calls and texts that overwhelm local cellular networks and block legitimate calls from getting through.
While this raid has no direct impact on the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University community, SIM farms operate around the country. The best way for the ERAU community to protect themselves from these threats is to practice strong cybersecurity habits.
You can register to the National Do Not Call Registry through the Federal Trade Commission, use strong and unique passwords, enable multifactor authentication, and remain skeptical and vigilant.
